The Father who runs towards us
“The Father Who Runs Toward Us” Luke 15:20 — “But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son…”
There are few stories in Scripture that reveal the heart of God like the story of the prodigal son. A young man walked away from everything good is family, his values, his inheritance, and his father’s love. He wanted freedom without relationship, blessing without surrender. Like many of us, he believed that life outside the Father’s house would satisfy. But sin always promises more than it gives. It takes you farther than you intended to go, keeps you longer than you intended to stay, and costs you more than you intended to pay.
Then comes the turning point. When he “came to himself,” he realised that life without the Father was empty. Even the servants in the Father’s house lived better than he did. And so, with shame, regret, and fear, he walked home expecting judgment, punishment, or rejection. But the Father did the unexpected. 1. The Father Saw Him Before the son ever reached the gate, the Father’s eyes were already looking for him. God sees every step you take toward Him even the smallest one. 2. The Father Ran to Him In that culture, dignified men didn’t run. But love breaks dignity. Love moves first. Love closes the distance. This is the Gospel: We don’t run to God, God ran to us through Jesus. 3. The Father Embraced Him No lecture. No conditions. No probation period. Just arms of grace. The robe restored his identity. The ring restored his authority. The sandals restored his dignity. The feast restored his joy.
Everything the son thought he lost the father restored. Wherever you are today near or far the Father is looking for you. If you’ve messed up, wandered, or grown cold… come home. If you feel unworthy His love will cover you. If you feel far away He’s already running toward you. Prayer: Father, thank You that Your love never gives up on me. Thank You for seeing me even when I am far away, and for running toward me with mercy. Restore my joy, renew my heart, and draw me close again. I come home to You today. Amen.
