Rejoice in the Lord Always

Scripture:
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!”  Philippians 4:4 (NIV)

Devotion

Life can often feel like a storm unexpected troubles, disappointments, sickness, or struggles that shake our hearts. In moments like these, the words of the Apostle Paul sound almost impossible: “Rejoice in the Lord always.” How can we rejoice when nothing seems to be going right?

Paul wrote these words from a prison cell, chained and uncertain of his future. Yet his heart overflowed with joy not because his circumstances were good, but because his God was good. His joy was not rooted in comfort or success, but in the unchanging character of the Lord.

True joy comes not from what’s happening around us, but from who is living within us.
When we choose to rejoice in the Lord, we lift our eyes above the pain and fix them on the One who never fails. Rejoicing reminds our hearts that God is still on the throne, that His love never wavers, and that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Even in tears, you can whisper, “Lord, I praise You.”
Even in loss, you can say, “You are faithful.”
Even in waiting, you can declare, “My hope is in You.”

As you choose to rejoice, God’s peace will begin to fill your heart. His presence will strengthen you, and His joy will become your strength (Nehemiah 8:10).

Reflection

What is one situation right now where you can choose to rejoice in the Lord rather than complain or fear?

How has God’s faithfulness in the past given you reason to rejoice today?

Prayer

Lord, thank You that my joy is not found in what I face but in who You are. Even when I walk through trials, You remain my strength and my song. Teach me to rejoice in You always, to trust You when I can’t see the way forward, and to find peace in Your presence. Today, I choose joy in You.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
