A Lenten Devotion: Preparing Our Hearts Before God
Lent is a sacred season in the Christian calendar a time to
slow down, reflect, and prepare our hearts before the Lord. As we journey
toward the cross and the resurrection of Jesus, Lent invites us to examine our
lives and draw nearer to God.
The Bible reminds us:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my
thoughts.” — Psalm 139:23
Lent is not merely about giving something up; it is about
opening our hearts to God. It is a time to lay aside distractions, confess our
sins, and allow the Holy Spirit to renew us from within.
Throughout Scripture, whenever people prepared themselves
for a deeper encounter with God, they humbled their hearts. They prayed,
fasted, and turned their attention back to the Lord. Lent calls us to do the
same.
During this season we should ask ourselves: Is my heart
fully surrendered to God? Am I walking in obedience to His Word? Are there
areas in my life that need repentance or renewal? The prophet Joel gave this powerful call: “Return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” — Joel 2:12
God is not looking for outward rituals alone; He desires
hearts that are soft, humble, and ready to receive Him.
As we walk through this Lenten season, let us: Spend more time in prayer Reflect deeply on the sacrifice of Jesus Repent of anything that separates us from God. Renew our
devotion to Him.
When we prepare our hearts before God, He draws near to us.
And as we approach Easter, we will not only remember the cross, we will
experience the transforming power of Christ in our lives.
Prayer: Lord, as we walk through this season of Lent, search
our hearts and purify our lives. Help us to turn away from anything that
displeases You and draw closer to Your presence. Prepare our hearts to remember
the sacrifice of Jesus and to live in the power of His resurrection. In Jesus’ Amen.
